ANALYZING IMPORTANT CHARACTERS

1. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bennet

Elizabeth is the second daughter of Mr. Bennet, she is the most intelligent and sensible of the five Bennet sisters. She is her father's favorite daughter. Her physical appearance is enough tall, beauty, and light brown hair. She also is portrayed as lively, attractive, and witty. She is quick to recognize most people's principal characteristics — for instance, she recognizes the stupidities of many members of her family. Her fault is a tendency to judge a person from first impressions. We think that she have a very sharp tongue that occasionally proves too sharp for her own good. Because of her habit, she believes the words of Mr. Wickham about Mr. Darcy. But finally the true fact reveal she realize her own mistaken impressions of Darcy, which initially lead her to reject his proposals of marriage. She knows that Mr. Darcy is not as worst as she thought then she falls in love with Mr. Darcy.

o Main character

She is the focus of this story.

o Static character

The writer does not change Elizabeth’s characterization significantly. From the beginning of the story, Elizabeth is a lively, attractive, and witty girl. She also has the same point of view about love that is love not only about property. The one that differ from her is only her opinion about Mr. Darcy. He thought that Mr. Darcy is a proud person but finally she changes her opinion when she knows the real fact.

o Round character

We determine her as a round character because she has many dimensional characters. She has good sides (those are beautiful, attractive, lively, friendly, etc) and bad sides (those are a sharp tongue and a tendency to judge a person from first impressions). She is also often reacting unexpectedly. For example; her family surprise when she wants to marry with Mr. Darcy. They never guess that she will love Mr.Darcy.

2. Jane Bennet

She is the eldest of the Bennets' five daughters and the one considered the most beautiful. Her physical appearance is not different with Elizabeth; enough tall, beauty, and light brown hair but her character is contrasted with Elizabeth's as sweeter, shyer and equally sensible but not as clever. She tends to hide her feelings. She is incapable of suspecting the worst of people, preferring to see only the good. Jane is closest to Elizabeth. Her true love is Mr. Bingley. She is so similar in nature and behavior with Mr. Bingley so that we regard them as a matching pairs in Pride and Prejudice.

· Static character

The writer does not change Jane’s characterization significantly. She is still a sweet and shy person. She always hides her feeling except for Elizabeth. Even when Mr. Bingley comes to her house in order to say proposal of married, she is still quite and cry. But we see that she really loves Mr. Bingley. She loves Mr. Bingley not only because he is rich but also she likes his attitude and style.

· Flat character

Jane Bennet only has one dimensional character that is her point of view about his love and interest to Mr. Bingley. We only see her occurrence from that side/angle.

3. Fitzwilliam Darcy

He is Mr. Bingley’s close friend and Elizabeth’s true love. He has one sister named Georgiana Darcy. His physical appearance is handsome, tall, and black hair, he also often uses coat. His character seems proud and careless. He looks proud and makes poor impression in front of stranger. Mr.Darcy sometimes assumes that lacks of money or social status are characteristics that disqualify people from marrying or loving each other. Elizabeth discovers this aspect from his character and makes she refuse Mr. Darcy’s proposal of Marriage. Actually Mr. Darcy’s characteristic is not as worst as Elizabeth thought. He is only an awkward and stiff person especially in front of new comer. He can not mix to the stranger well. But we see that he tries to change his character in order to get Elizabeth’s heart. One thing that should be noted about Fitzwilliam Darcy is he is a loyal friend. He helps Mr. Bingley to say Mr. Bingleys proposal of marriage to Jane Bennet.

· Main character

He is the male main character. Because when the story focuses on Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy often includes in a conflict.

· Dynamic character

We think that Mr. Darcy changes his character in the middle of story. But we see that his character is not fully change. He only tries to change his attitude in order to get Elizabeth’s heart. For instance; he is not proud to Elizabeth anymore. In his house at Pemberley, he runs away to catch Elizabeth and wants to accompany her. He also treats Elizabeth uncle (Mr. Edward Gardiner) well and makes him admire.

4. Charles Bingley

He is a close friend of Fitzwilliam Darcy. He also is a true love of Jane Bennet. He lives near the Mr. Bennet’s house. His physical appearance is handsome, good-looking, wealthy and light brown hair. He is contrasted with his friend Mr. Darcy as being less intelligent but kinder and more charming. He is very interested with Elizabeth’s elder sister; Jane Bennet. He meets with Jane in a party at the beginning of the story (introduced by Mrs. Bennet). He and Jane have similarity in nature and behavior. Both are cheerful, friendly, and good-natured, always ready to think the best of others. They also shy and often hide their feeling.

Mr. Bingley is easy affected by others. Caroline Bingley (His cousin), and Darcy believe that the Bennet family is too far down the social status and not good enough for Mr. Bingley. But Mr. Bingley finally marries Jane bennet.

· Static character

The writer does not change Bingley’s characterization significantly. He is still a kind, cheerful, friendly, and shy person. He always interests and loves Jane Bennet. One thing that should be noted about him is his stiffness. When he plans to say his proposal of marriage to Jane Bennet, he is very stiff. He can not say his proposal firstly; he must train with Mr. Darcy in the edge of lake. But finally his proposal is accepted and he marries with Jane Bennet.

· Flat character

Mr. Bingley only has one dimensional character that is his point of view about his love and interest to Jane Bennet. We only see his occurrence from that side/angle.
